After the baby is born but before they get out of Manticore, Renfro sends Tinga and Shane on a mission – using their child as a means to gain Tinga’s participation.

before tinga meets up with charlie, shane and baby in tow, the two are sent on a mission. renfro holds the kid as collateral, which will ensure that tinga performs as desired. she is sent with shane b/c she knows that the bond of parents to a child, they will do whatever it takes to stay alive or at least preserve the other so one of them can take care of the child.
on this mission, they are compromised and are facing a firing squad
in a moment of weakness, both believing the end is upon them, they give in to the uncertain and unnamed feelings and kiss.
they are marched out and stood against the wall of the building, spattered in dried blood of others long dead, and they share a look between them that might be interpreted as regretful, and most definitely anguished.
the guards take aim, the two transgenics close their eyes. shots are fired but nothing happened. slowly and cautiously, they reopen their eyes to find a single soldier having gunned down all the others. he releases their bound wrists and ankles and helps them escape the country.
the entire trip home the two do not exchange a single word. tensions are high until they meet up with charlie, months later.
