Chaos Theory – Story Synopsis & Chapter Outlines

Chaos is an AU rewrite of Dark Angel season one and up. (PG-13 rating) The idea was hatched early in my writing career, back in late 2004, and is lovingly dubbed my “baby”. It is the story I keep coming back to (and fully intend to finish eventually!) no matter how what sidetracks me. The following is a brief overview/synopsis and chapters outlines.

SYNOPSIS

Shortly after meeting Logan Cale, a.k.a Eyes Only, and forming a tentative and wary partnership, Max is recaptured by Manticore. Thrown back into an environment she had written off as the past, Max meets a fellow Transgenic, who later becomes her commanding officer. They are united by a shaky, fragile friendship, only slowly building up trust and learning to work with each other.

But all is not what it seems. Two opposing factions are at work behind the scenes, with moles both within and without Manticore, wielding power and influence to achieve their respective goals. They struggle for dominance as they both search for the individual that will prove to be their salvation or downfall.

In the meantime, the ’09ers face disovery and death at the hands of their creators and persecutors. As if that danger and turmoil weren’t enough, they have to deal with the usual issues of sibling rivalry, relationships and of course, problems in the real world.

Banding together with allies they would never have expected, the escaped unit, along with Max and her C.O. and new friends, put a plan in motion to save their fellow Transgenics, family and ultimately, the entire human race.

Wherein we see what Max is up to at the start of our story.

Max meets the wealthy Mr. Logan Cale and makes plans.

Chapter 3 – Proposition
Eyes Only takes a risk and Max makes a decision.

Chapter 4 – Apprehension
Where Asha isn’t quite happy and Max isn’t quite open.

Chapter 5 – Planting the Seeds
Sandeman’s first true success and plans are set in motion.

Chapter 6 – Making Waves
The truth behind the Pulse. (And you thought he was bad before!)

Chapter 7 – Unraveling the Past
Asha’s feeling a bit neglected, Max spills a bit about her past and Logan pushes too hard.

Chapter 8 – Nightmares
X5-494 is remembering what he was made to forget. Twist on TBA flashbacks.

Chapter 9 – Contemplations
Where we get a little insight into White, Renfro and the Cult, learn about the triangle between 714, 664 and 494. And finally, 494 pitches an idea to fellow squad mates.

Chapter 10 – Reemergence
A harsh nightmare brings some of Max’s past to light and she finally opens up more to Logan. We learn about Zack’s first love and loss.

Chapter 11 – Just Another Day
Max goes on an Eyes Only mission that ends in disaster.

Chapter 12 – Just Another Day, Take Two
What really happened during the mission?

Chapter 13 – Nightmarish Reality
Who were the mysterious X5s used to trap Max? Surprise, surprise.

Chapter 14 – Heated Developments
494’s mission doesn’t go exactly according to plan. The troublesome Triangle (714, 664, 494) rears its ugly head again.

Chapter 15 – Betrayal
664’s plan for revenge backfires. The mission comes to a close, but while not a complete disaster, 494 is not yet in the clear.

Chapter 16 – Observations
494 comes before Lydecker and Renfro to report on the mission. Things go better than he expected but not well. 494 discovers an ally within Manticore and later gets a glimpse of a stranger.

Chapter 17 – Curious Developments
494 observes a fellow inmate and helps in a time of need. He also ovehears strange interactions between said inmate and Lydecker that leave him with questions.

Chapter 18 – Partners In Pain
494 and Max officially meet. They help each other through some tough times. All the while, Max retains her attitude and it intrigues and annoys 494. Max names Alec.

Chapter 19 – Target Acquired
Penny Smith is discovered and makes a run for it. An X5 makes a surprising decision that saves lives. Tinga calls Zack for help. A friendly truck driver tries to help a runaway. And finally, Tinga awakens to a nightmare.

Chapter 20 – Confusing Revelations
Lydecker deems Max ready for reintegration into training. Max and Alec both sense something they can’t explain.

Chapter 21 – Making Headway
Max worries about her upcoming introduction to a new unit under a new C.O. Lydecker spies on Renfro and discovers some troubling information and makes plans of his own. Zack and Zane get some bad news and decide to take action.

Chapter 22 – Uncharted Territory
Lydecker meets his contact and they discuss previous revelations about Renfro. Hannah has some other worrying information about a new project that’s very hush-hush. Plans are set in motion regarding Max. Zack and Zane search out Eyes Only for a lead on Max. The two brothers start to clash but set aside there differences while interrogating Logan.

Chapter 23 – Roughing It
Max’s attidue does nothing to ingratiate her to her new C.O. Her attempt at a joke backfires and sets her further apart from her unit who hate her on principle. Lydecker appeals to Max for assistance she is reluctant to give. Max learns the truth about someone she loved. Max’s unit begins to see her in a different light.

Chapter 24 – Infractions and Reactions
Max’s life if made a living hell by her unit mates and a C.O. who is reluctant to intervene. Alec gets mad at Max but later regrets his actions. Alec has a nightmare that leaves him scared and confused.

Chapter 25 – The Small Matter Of Trust
Continued bullying by her peers and lack of sleep are getting to Max and she finally opens up to Alec a bit. It’s two steps forward, one step back for the pair, but their connection grows. At seeing Max’s uncertainty about Lydecker, Alec takes a chance and shares some information that will change the course of everyone’s futures.

Chapter 26 – One Wrong Move
Jondy wakes following her capture to find herself in the custody of Ames White. Zack and Zane have been with Logan for a few weeks and are trying to find out the whereabouts of the females from their unit. Zane is brassed off at Zack’s attitude. Hannah makes some discoveries and almost gets caught. Max finally tells Lydecker her decision.

Chapter 27 – Clandestine Coalition
A brief history of Sandeman’s plans for the X5s and his connection to the Breeding Cult. An overview of the divisons within the Familiar hierarchy and their purposes. We learn about Lydecker’s allegiances, his wife and how he got involved with Manticore. Sandeman’s son breaks away from his father.

Chapter 28 – Bend and Not Break
Max wants to know the reasons behind Lydecker’s request and willingness to get involved. Max makes a surprising suggestion to Lydecker when a plan is hatched. Testing is begun on Tinga. Zane’s finally had enough of Zack. Krit and Syl try to intervene but ultimately agree with Zane. The siblings split up to cover more ground and keep from hurting each other. Jondy remains sane only through her memories and the comfort of a stranger.
